Overview
Buddha Belly Bamboo (Bambusa ventricosa), locally celebrated as Kalash Bamboo, is an extraordinary architectural evergreen favored in tropical and subtropical landscaping. What sets this plant apart are the characteristically ventricose, bulbous stems (culms) that swell between nodes as the plant matures. In Nepali homes and landscapes, it serves both as an auspicious symbol of prosperity and abundance and as an eye-catching focal centerpiece for open verandas, rooftops, and perimeter gardens.
Our nursery specimens are hardened and conditioned to thrive in the climate of Jhapa, ensuring strong clump formation without aggressive or unwanted sprawling when grown in planters.
Care Quick Guide
-
Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Ample sunlight encourages pronounced swelling of the culms.
-
Watering: Moderate to regular watering. While relatively drought-tolerant once established, keep the soil consistently moist (never waterlogged) for lush, vivid foliage.
-
Soil: Fertile, well-draining garden soil enriched with mature compost.
-
Container Growing: Highly recommended for large ceramic or cement pots. Moderate root restriction in containers helps accentuate the signature “Buddha belly” / “Kalash” bulge.
-
Pruning & Maintenance: Trim lower side branches periodically to expose the unique bulbous culms and maintain clean sculptural lines.
Symbolism: Revered in Feng Shui and Asian horticulture for attracting positive energy, resilience, and balance.
