Laxmi Prasad Joshi, fondly known as LP Joshi, was born in 1993 BS (1936 AD) in the picturesque village of Beechbazar, Dhankuta-6, nestled in the hills of Eastern Nepal. From a young age, Joshi exhibited a profound love for music and football, hobbies that would shape his childhood and early years. The melodies of his homeland resonated deeply within him, laying the foundation for a lifelong dedication to folk music.

Joshi’s journey into the world of music began early. Growing up in the culturally rich environment of Dhankuta, he was exposed to traditional folk songs and dances that celebrated the heritage and daily life of the region. His passion for preserving and promoting these cultural treasures led him to become an active participant in local musical events and gatherings.

Throughout his life, Joshi remained committed to the preservation and promotion of Nepali folk culture. He traveled extensively across the country, performing at various cultural festivals and events, where his soulful renditions of folk songs captivated audiences. His voice became synonymous with the authentic sounds of Eastern Nepal, earning him a revered place in the hearts of many.

Joshi’s contributions to the field of folk music are immeasurable. He was not just a singer but a cultural ambassador who tirelessly worked to keep the traditions of Nepali folk music alive. His repertoire included a vast array of traditional songs that spoke of love, nature, social issues, and the everyday lives of the people. Each performance was a testament to his deep understanding and appreciation of the cultural heritage he sought to preserve.

In recognition of his unwavering dedication and immense talent, Joshi received numerous accolades throughout his career. Just a month and a half before his passing, he was conferred an honorary doctorate by a prestigious Indian university, acknowledging his contributions to the cultural fabric of the region. Additionally, he was honored by the President of Nepal, a testament to his impact on the country’s cultural landscape. He was also bestowed with the title of “Folk Song Emperor,” highlighting his status as a leading figure in Nepali folk music.

One of Joshi’s notable achievements was his performance of the musical drama “Muna Madan” in Damak in the year 2026 BS (1969 AD). This was the first time the drama was performed in Nepal, showcasing his versatility and dedication to promoting Nepali literature through music.

Joshi spent his final years in Damak, Jhapa, living with his son Milan and his family. His sudden passing on a Thursday evening left a void in the world of Nepali folk music. According to family sources, Joshi was having dinner with his family when he suddenly collapsed and fell unconscious. Despite being rushed to the Birtamod-based hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Laxmi Prasad Joshi’s passing marks the end of an era. His legacy, however, continues to live on through the countless songs he performed and the cultural heritage he so passionately upheld. His contributions have ensured that the traditional folk music of Nepal remains vibrant and cherished by future generations.
